Music Production & Recording

Logic Pro Apple’s own digital audio workstation built for the Mac OS X platform.

Abelton Live A software designed to record and sequence both live music and MIDI

FL Studio (formerly known as Fruity Loops) One of the most used digital audio workstations used worldwide. Mostly used by DJs, electronic and hip hop producers.

Pro Tools The industry standard recording and sequencing software. Pretty much every major studio or professional producer employs Pro Tools by Avid Technology.

Distribution & Marketing

TuneCore An online music distribution platform. TuneCore focuses exclusively on digital distribution, unlike CDBaby which was founded to give independent artists physical distribution. I’ve used TuneCore extensively in the past, but for independent artists and special releases for major artists. When dealing with iTunes directly, they actually push artists to TuneCore for distribution on iTunes. I also like how TuneCore allows artists to keep 100% of their sales revenue and publishing income. They charge a flat fee for distribution.

CDBaby My first experience with independent distribution was with CDBaby. They are a great company and love to support artists. CDBaby first offered independent artists the opportunity to sell CD’s online and in some retailers. Later they added digital distribution and other services to their platform. They charge a flat fee plus a small commission to release music on their platform.
